There is an interesting op ed by journalist Garance Franke-Ruta about what she calls The Myth of Natural Beauty that is especially characteristic of American society in her opinion. She contrasts this general orientation to another one, that of the French who, on the contrary, know how to and indeed do cultivate beauty as an art (de vivre, I might add).
It seems clear to me that most societies in the world privilege natural beauty and in fact this ties in with the phenomenon of agism as applied to women. Once a woman loses her youthful aura, there is rarely anymore salvation for her in the eyes of men in these societies. I think that France is one of the few countries I know and perhaps the most characteristic in that regard that in fact value the beauty, chic, elegance, and seduction of older women. If there is one place in the world where a woman of 90 years old could be sincerely thought to be beautiful that would be France....
